UN Report Criticizes Biofuel Subsidies

Law360, New York (October 7, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The United Nations has warned in a new report that subsidies for the production of biofuels in developed countries may drive up food prices, hurt rural farmers and threaten environmental sustainability.

In a report titled "The State of Food and Agriculture," released Tuesday, the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization said that while subsidies for biofuels — fuels made from plant matter — could bring benefits to countries around the world, current subsidy policies are preventing developing countries from reaping those benefits.
