Tenet Agrees to Pay $900M In Alleged Medicare Swindle

Law360, New York (June 29, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Tenet Healthcare Corporation has agreed to pay $725 million and waive $175 million in Medicare payments to settle allegations that it bilked Medicare and other federal health care programs.

"The Medicare program currently faces great challenges, and can ill afford attempts by hospitals to manipulate and cheat the system," said U.S. Attorney Debra Wong Yang of the Central District of California. "This settlement demonstrates our strong commitment to recovering taxpayer funds from health care companies that break the rules in pursuit of higher profits."
