As Drug Risks Mount, Senators Put Pressure On FDA

Law360, New York (July 10, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- With pharmaceutical companies facing legal fire over the safety of their drugs, two U.S. Senators are proposing bolstering the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s powers to assess the potential risks of new prescription medicines.

The proposed bill, sponsored by Senators Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Michael B. Enzi (R-Wyo.), would generate extra funding for the agency, in part by creating higher fines for drug companies that fail to follow through on safety studies after drugs have hit the market.
