Japan To Ask EU To Block BHP-Rio Tinto Merger

Law360, New York (October 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- After BHP Billiton Ltd. rebuffed a request by Japan's Federal Trade Commission for more information on the global mining giant's proposed $130 billion hostile takeover bid of Rio Tinto Group, Japan reportedly plans to ask the European Union to block the merger as early as Friday.

Japan's Vice-Minister for International Affairs, Hiroyuki Ishige, is scheduled to meet with Philip Lowe, who runs the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition, on Friday, Japan's Jiji Press reported.
