Faux-Blood Maker Says Med. Journal Article Libelous

Law360, New York (October 31, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Biopure Corp., a maker of blood substitutes, has filed a libel suit against a National Institutes of Health official who wrote an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association claiming that the company's Hemopure product increases the risk of heart attacks and death.

The suit is the latest legal skirmish over Hemopure. Biopure was the target of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit that accused the company of misleading the public about Hemopure's chances of approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration....
