Judge Slashes Rambus Award By $174M

Law360, New York (July 18, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The federal judge overseeing Rambus Inc.’s drawn-out patent battle against Hynix Semiconductor Inc. has slashed the jury's $307 million penalty against Hynix, calling the stunning sum “exaggerated.”

Judge Ronald M. Whyte, with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, reduced the award Monday to $133.6 million.

The reduction was included in a court order granting Hynix’ motion for a new trial to challenge the damages, which were awarded in April.
