Saudi Health Ministry Sues Cigarette Importers

Law360, New York (November 12, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health has slapped cigarette importers with a $34 billion lawsuit aiming to recoup the costs of medical treatment for smoking-related illnesses that have plagued the country.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind for the Middle East, where chronic smoking is common and governments have only recently started to interfere.

The lawsuit was filed against 13 Saudi cigarette importers, not the companies that manufacture the tobacco products, the ministry confirmed.
