Infomercials, Criminal Contempt And The Speedy Trial Act

Law360, New York (April 7, 2016, 10:21 AM EDT) -- Keven Trudeau was a late-night television staple. He hosted television infomercials where he hawked his latest health care regimen, weight-loss book or memory techniques. The Federal Trade Commission received complaints about his penchant for making exaggerated or otherwise false claims in these broadcasts and entered into a consent decree with him in which he promised not to misrepresent the content of his books in the infomercials. Apparently his "Mega Memory System" failed him because he misrepresented several things about his book "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About" when he promoted it in one of his infomercials after entering into the consent decree. This prompted the FTC to seek an order of contempt....
