USDA Mulls Deregulating GE Corn For Ethanol

Law360, New York (November 25, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is seeking public comment on a proposal to deregulate genetically engineered corn that would supposedly facilitate ethanol production, the agency announced Monday.

Swiss agricultural giant Syngenta Seeds Inc. filed the petition to deregulate a corn varietal that has been genetically engineered to produce a microbial enzyme that would facilitate ethanol production.

The call for comments seeks to determine whether the modified corn will pose a plant pest risk and to assess any environmental side effects of deregulating it.
