Tribes Challenge Federal Pipeline Project

Law360, New York (November 26, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Four American Indian tribes have sued the U.S. government to halt the construction of an oil pipeline under way in the Dakotas, claiming that the federal project sidestepped input from the tribal governments, thus trashing tribal rights over the land.

The complaint, lodged Nov. 24 in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, claims the construction of the so-called Keystone Pipeline has been undertaken precipitously, without regard for the lands’ cultural and religious significance.
