Fla. High Court Keeps $545K Verdict Against Liggett

Law360, New York (December 11, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Supreme Court of Florida has decided to let stand a $545,000 jury verdict against tobacco company Liggett Group Inc. in the case of a woman who smoked the company's Chesterfield-brand cigarettes for more than 20 years.

In a 6-1 decision issued Thursday, with one judge concurring, the Florida high court said simply that it initially had accepted jurisdiction to take on the case, but that on further consideration, was exercising its discretion to discharge the matter.
