8x8 Sues Sony Ericsson Over Compression Technology

Law360, New York (January 21, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Videophone maker 8x8 has sued a joint venture between Japan’s Sony and Sweden’s Ericsson in federal court in the Eastern District of Texas over patents for compression technology used in Sony Ericsson’s popular camera phones.

The suit accuses Sony Ericsson of “willful infringement” and seeks a preliminary and permanent injunction against sales of the infringing products, as well as treble damages and attorneys’ fees.

The complaint claims Sony Ericsson’s imaging phones are infringing two of 8x8’s patents for video compression and decompression technology.
