Tobacco Co., States Strike Deal Over Marketing Items

Law360, New York (January 7, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. has reached a settlement with 41 states and the District of Columbia to stop distributing merchandise that the state attorneys general allege would violate the terms of a landmark 1998 tobacco settlement.

The attorneys general said Wednesday that the New Mexico-based company violated the master settlement agreement by distributing decorative tin signs that featured its “Natural American Spirit” cigarettes brand. The 1998 settlement prohibits tobacco companies from dispensing certain types of promotional materials, including decorative signs.
