Time To Re-Evaluate Pensions Amid Losses: Study

Law360, New York (January 7, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- After limping into the new year, major U.S. corporations, facing myriad challenges, are well-advised to re-evaluate the risks tied to pension plans that now pose a daunting burden on corporate earnings, according to a recent study by business consultants Mercer LLC.

In the past year, S&P 1500 companies have endured a precipitous decline in the funded status of their pension plans, which fell almost 30 percent from year-end 2007 to 75 percent, representing a loss of approximately $469 billion, Mercer said.
