Law360, New York (January 07, 2009, 12:00 AM ET) -- Although the federal government has traditionally exercised exclusive powers over immigration, an electorate nervous about jobs and the economy is demanding that state and local governments enact measures which are immigration-related.

One area where states are beginning to exercise enforcement powers is with regard to the verification of employment eligibility of employees within their states, including those who work on state and local contracts.
