UK Forced Retirement Law May Skirt Bias Rules: EU

Law360, New York (March 5, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Union's highest court ruled Thursday that a British law allowing employers to force workers who have reached 65 or another set age to retire would not run afoul of EU policy barring age discrimination as long as the law accomplishes a legitimate social policy goal.

After issuing its preliminary ruling, the European Court of Justice sent the case back to the U.K.'s own high court to decide whether the law does in fact serve a broader social policy purpose.
