Judge Blocks Army Corps Coal Mining Permits

Law360, New York (April 1, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge has granted summary judgment to environmental groups that challenged the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over its process for granting streamlined permits that allow for mountaintop removal coal mining in West Virginia.

The corps failed to evaluate the cumulative environmental impacts of such national permits, Judge Joseph R. Goodwin ruled Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
