EU Bans Chemical Linked To Dermatitis Outbreaks

Law360, New York (April 30, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A biocide in furniture and shoes that causes severe allergic reactions in some has been banned from the European Union, after an emergency decision by the European Commission.

Dimethylfumarate, often used in couches and shoes, will no longer be allowed in products imported into the European Union as of May 1, the European Commission announced Thursday.

The EU had already banned the use of DMF by domestic industry, but furniture makers abroad — particularly some manufacturers in China — continued to use the chemical.
