DOJ Defends Deputy AG Nominee's Role With AIG

Law360, New York (June 17, 2010, 4:34 PM ET) -- The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday defended Bryan Cave LLP partner and deputy attorney general nominee James Cole in his role as independent monitor of American International Group Inc. amid allegations he shielded certain of AIG's transactions from regulatory oversight.

The DOJ told Law360 that Cole — accused Wednesday by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, of exempting some of the insurer's derivative deals from scrutiny — had implemented needed reforms at AIG during his time as a federally appointed monitor of the insurance giant in 2005...
