HHS Scolds Health Insurers For Requested Rate Hikes

Law360, New York (February 18, 2010, 2:48 PM ET) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report Thursday slamming major U.S. health insurers for requesting premium increases of double-digit percentages while raking in large profits, hoping to underscore the need for cost containment measures in health care reform legislation.

The HHS report follows on the heels of federal and state regulators' condemnation of a recent proposal from WellPoint Inc. subsidiary Anthem Blue Cross that proposed raising premium rates within California's individual health insurance market as high as 39 percent.
