Unilever Wins Approval Of Settlement In Trans Fat Suits

Law360, New York (June 22, 2011, 4:30 PM ET) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday approved a reworked settlement of two class actions that allege a Unilever PLC unit touted trans fat-filled margarines as healthy, months after rejecting an earlier settlement that required fewer concessions from Unilever.

The settlement resolves a pair of lawsuits accusing Unilever US Inc. of marketing its I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, Country Crock and other brands of cholesterol-free margarines as good for cardiovascular health, although each contained what the plaintiffs argued were dangerously high levels of trans fats....
