Lucent Verdict In Microsoft Patent Fight Cut To $70M

Law360, New York (July 29, 2011, 8:45 PM ET) -- A California federal jury on Friday said that Microsoft Corp. should pay Lucent Technologies Inc. $70 million for infringing a patent covering on-screen computer tools, overriding an earlier jury's $358 million verdict.

The new verdict comes after the Federal Circuit upheld a 2008 jury's decision against Microsoft but overruled their large award, saying it seemed based on speculation and guesswork.

Most experts had expected that the chance at a do-over would mean a lesser penalty for Microsoft, whose Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Money and Windows Mobile applications...
