Weather Channel Struck By Text Messaging Lawsuit

Law360, New York (August 07, 2012, 1:24 PM ET) -- The Weather Channel LLC deluged consumers with unwanted text messages advertising its forecasting services, violating the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, one alleged victim said Thursday in a proposed class action.

The suit is part of a growing body of litigation surrounding advertising practices targeting consumers’ cell phones, either by text messages or other methods such as robocalls. Government regulators have stepped up their oversight of the practices recently. But plaintiff Michael Rossell contends wireless spam is a growing problem in the U.S.
