Macy's Inc. agreed Thursday to pay $8.5 million to settle a class action brought by members of company retirement plans who accused the retailer of funneling their nest eggs into its own stock while knowing it was an unwise investment.

An Ohio federal judge granted conditional class certification Thursday to Macy's Inc. retirement plan members who claim their nest eggs were hurt when the retailer omitted details about setbacks in converting department store outlets Macy's acquired in 2005.
