An American Electric Power unit will retire a coal-fired power plant in Texas in order to settle claims by the National Audubon Society and Sierra Club seeking to block construction of a new $1.7 billion plant in Arkansas, the groups announced Thursday.

A federal judge on Wednesday denied requests by Southwest Electric Power Co. to throw out a suit by three environmental organizations challenging a Clean Water Act permit for the company's forthcoming coal power plant in southwest Arkansas.
