HTC Corp. and a company led by an attorney described as "the original patent troll" agreed Wednesday, less than a week before a scheduled trial date in Illinois federal court, to a settlement in a patent infringement lawsuit over a software allegedly used in HTC cell phones.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and HTC Corp. urged an Illinois federal judge on Tuesday to nix a patent infringement suit brought by Cascades Computer Innovation LLC over their use of Google's Android operating system, claiming Cascades exhausted its patent rights by entering into a licensing agreement with Google.
