Kimberly-Clark Corp. reached a settlement Tuesday in a lawsuit that claimed its protective bed-wetting sheets infringed a rival's trade dress, resolving the case without a ruling on whether the design was too functional to be covered by trademark law.

A Virginia federal judge on Friday threw out allegations that Kimberly-Clark Corp.'s incontinence bed mat product infringed the registered trade dress on McAirlaids Inc.'s absorbent pads, ruling that McAirlaids' design serves a function and doesn't qualify as trade dress.
