A coalition of domestic honey producers on Friday urged an Illinois federal judge to sign off on an almost $800,000 settlement with holdout companies in a class action that claimed $180 million worth of harm to the U.S. honey market from an alleged scheme to smuggle Chinese honey into the country.

An Illinois federal judge granted final approval Friday to a $3 million settlement over an alleged scheme to smuggle Chinese honey into the U.S., allowing the former heads of U.S. honey importer Groeb Farms to exit a class action that claims $180 million worth of harm to the domestic honey market.

Chinese Imports Targeted In Honey Laundering Class Action
Three U.S. honey producers hit alleged Chinese honey smuggler Groeb Farms Inc. with a proposed class action Wednesday in Illinois federal court, accusing the company of defrauding the U.S. government and domestic honey-makers by "laundering" cheap, altered versions of the sweetener to conceal its Chinese origin.
