A Pennsylvania federal judge wrongly forced two cardiac telemetry manufacturers to arbitrate their claims that Cigna Health Corp. violated federal pension laws and unfair competition laws when it decided to stop covering the devices, an attorney for the companies told the Third Circuit during oral arguments on Wednesday.

Cigna Health Corp. on Thursday told the Third Circuit that a district court had correctly sent to arbitration a suit by diagnostic testing companies that claim its decision to stop covering their services violated federal pension law, saying the ruling adhered to well-established Supreme Court precedent.
