Starbucks Corp. can't immediately appeal a sanctions ruling in a dispute with a chair maker over an alleged defect, in part because of its own legal department's "significant degree of culpability" in the destruction of chairs that would have been evidence, a Virginia federal judge ruled Monday.

A decision by Starbucks Corp.'s legal department to destroy over 7,000 chairs in a dispute with the chairs' manufacturer over alleged design defects amounted to willful evidence spoliation, a Virginia federal judge found Tuesday in an order sanctioning the coffee giant.
