A Florida federal judge on Monday tossed, at least temporarily, one of the first lawsuits brought under the Defend Trade Secrets Act, finding the filing construction firm failed to take reasonable steps to protect payroll information it claimed an electricians union wrongly obtained from the city of Miami Beach.

The city of Miami Beach and an electricians union sought Thursday to dismiss one of the first suits filed under the recently passed Defend Trade Secrets Act, arguing that the employee data of a subcontractor working on a renovation project does not qualify as a trade secret.

In one of the first suits filed under the recently passed Defend Trade Secrets Act, an engineering and telecom services provider sued the city of Miami Beach in Florida federal court Monday alleging it unlawfully disclosed confidential employee data to a local electricians union.
