Count Basie, Others Say UMG Owes Them $6M In Royalties

Law360, New York (May 04, 2012, 9:50 PM ET) -- A group of iconic musicians — including the estates of Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Sarah Vaughan — filed a $6 million suit Friday accusing Universal Music Group Inc. of hiding payments from record clubs that worked to suppress the musicians' royalties.

In a suit filed in New York state court, the musicians accuse UMG of receiving inflated advances from record clubs like Columbia House and BMG Music Service, allowing the record clubs to use the artists' recordings at minimal royalty rates or for free....
