Varney Says DOJ To Probe Dairy Industry

Law360, New York (September 21, 2009, 4:21 PM ET) -- Consolidation and considerable change in the dairy industry will be carefully evaluated by regulators, the head of the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division told lawmakers.

At a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing held Saturday in Vermont, Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney said: “Parts of the dairy industry have experienced extensive consolidation in recent years, with fewer processors and therefore fewer buyers of dairy products. As a result of consolidation, the potential for an exercise of buyer power has increased.”
