Leahy Urges Insurance Antitrust Exemption Repeal

Law360, New York (December 01, 2009, 6:13 PM ET) -- Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said Tuesday he would file an amendment to pending health care legislation in order to repeal the health insurance industry's exemption from federal antitrust laws.

The proposed amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would eliminate the antitrust exemption currently enjoyed by the health insurance and medical malpractice insurance industries, Leahy said.

Earlier this year, Leahy introduced a stand-alone bill, the Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act, to repeal the exemption.
