New EU Competition Head Promises Tough Stance

Law360, New York (January 12, 2010, 4:26 PM ET) -- Incoming European Commission competition chief Joaquin Almunia on Tuesday vowed at confirmation hearings before the European Parliament that he would not hesitate to break up mergers that could hurt European consumers.

“I will therefore not hesitate to take action against companies or governments when I find evidence of unlawful behavior,” Almunia said, according to written answers submitted to members of Parliament.
