Russian Minister Criticizes Gazprom-SUEK Merger

Law360, New York (February 16, 2007, 12:00 AM ET) -- Russia's Economy Minister German Gref has reportedly lashed out at the proposed merger of state-controlled gas monopoly Gazprom and coal company SUEK, calling the union “bad for competition.”

Gref told reporters at an economic forum the in Siberian town of Krasnoyarsk on Friday that Gazprom's purchase of SUEK's coal assets is “a dangerous extreme” in economic policies, adding that regulators should “preserve competition in our country,” according to Reuters.
