Law360, New York (August 26, 2010, 5:07 PM ET) -- The Federal Communications Commission should probe the cell phone market to see whether its four dominant players are hurting competition, the U.S. Government Accountability Office said in a report released Thursday.
The four major cell phone companies — AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA Inc. and Verizon Wireless — have gained control of 90 percent of the $150 billion-a-year industry through a series of mergers, but the FCC lacks the data to determine if that dominance is hurting consumers or competitors, the GAO said.
