Ryanair Accuses Italy Of Protectionism

Law360, New York (August 08, 2007, 12:00 AM ET) -- A decision by Italian authorities to cut air traffic at one of the country's largest airports has drawn the wrath of low-cost Irish airline Ryanair, which fired off a lawsuit accusing the Italian government of protecting national carrier Alitalia.

Ryanair CEO Micheal O'Leary decried the decision to cut flights into and out of Rome's Ciampino airport as protectionist, blasting the Italian aviation authority for trying to keep the struggling Alitalia afloat.
