Hutchison's €1.3B Bid For Orange Draws EU Inspection

Law360, New York (June 29, 2012, 9:26 PM ET) -- The European Commission opened a full investigation Friday into Hutchison 3G Austria GmbH's €1.3 billion ($1.64 billion) plan to acquire rival Orange Austria Telecommunication GmbH over concerns the deal would have anti-competitive effects on the market for mobile phone services.

The regulator's initial probe found that the proposed deal could wind up creating antitrust problems by removing France Telecom SA's Orange as a competitor both in the Austrian retail market for end consumers as well as the country's wholesale market for call origination and network access,...
