DOJ Pushes For Clearer Essential-Patent Licensing Rules

Law360, New York (October 10, 2012, 8:35 PM ET) -- An official with the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division on Wednesday urged the telecommunications industry to take advantage of its global patent litigation battles to clarify the licensing rules that govern the standard-setting process.

Renata B. Hesse, a deputy assistant attorney general at the Antitrust Division, pushed for companies involved in the standard-setting process and standard-setting organizations themselves to work out clearer rules to govern the licensing process for patents that cover technology that has been adopted as an industry standard.
