Cancer Institute Says Doctor Stole $1B In Research

Law360, New York (December 15, 2011, 12:12 PM ET) -- A nonprofit cancer research institute on Tuesday claimed a former employee has cost it at least $1 billion by using his patentable, institute-funded research to found a for-profit company that made a development deal with pharmaceutical giant Celgene Corp.

The University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute hit Dr. Craig Thompson with breach of contract and patent infringement claims for allegedly taking the research to his company, Agios Pharmaceuticals Inc., and making the deal with Celgene.
