Law360, New York (June 13, 2012, 8:26 PM ET) -- A judge on Tuesday approved a consent decree between the federal government and New Jersey over alleged race discrimination in civil service exams for police sergeants, despite objections from some officers that the settlement would unfairly deny them promotions.
In a 57-page opinion addressing 468 written objections, the intervention bid by a group of Paterson, N.J., police officers and other issues, U.S. Judge Katharine S. Hayden described the pact as a “a conscientious and careful settlement, reached after lengthy litigation.”
