Sackos Suit Is Just The Latest Setback For The NCAA

Law360, New York (December 4, 2014, 10:34 AM EST) -- A collective action filed in October poses the latest challenge to the amateur status of college athletes, who continue to score points against the NCAA in a growing campaign to secure pay for athletes' play on the field and on the court. The suit is Sackos v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, No. 14-cv-0170 (D. Ind.), and was filed in federal court on the NCAA's home turf in Indianapolis by a former women's soccer player at the University of Houston. The plaintiff claims that she and other student athletes are "employees" under the Fair Labor Standards Act and are entitled to minimum wages under the statute....
