Law360, New York (February 23, 2007, 12:00 AM ET) -- 71-year-old South Korean businessman Tongsun Park, once called the “Asian Great Gatsby,” was sentenced on Thursday to five years in prison for his role in the scandal surrounding the United Nations’ Oil-for-Food program.
Launched in 1996, the humanitarian aid program was intended to help Iraqis manage after the U.N. imposed crippling sanctions on the country in response to Saddam's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Under the initiative, Saddam's regime was allowed to sell oil as long as the proceeds went primarily to humanitarian goods and war reparations....
