Massey, Aracoma Mine Fire Survivors Settle Suits

Law360, New York (October 12, 2010, 5:17 PM ET) -- Nine miners who sued Massey Energy Co. after surviving the January 2006 Aracoma mine fire that killed two of their co-workers have settled their personal injury claims against the coal company.

Terms of the settlements, reached ahead of a trial that was scheduled in Logan County Circuit Court, were not disclosed by Massey Energy, which confirmed the deals Tuesday.

Massey spokesman Jeff Gillenwater said the settlements were funded by the Richmond, Va.-based coal company's insurance carriers but did not comment further.
