Law360, New York (May 03, 2012, 7:35 PM ET) -- A new federal study linking small earthquakes to underground injections of wastewater from oil and natural gas development will likely prompt state regulators to take a fresh look at how operators dispose of those hydraulic fracturing byproducts.
The study, released last month by the U.S. Geological Survey, dovetails with research conducted by states such as Ohio and Arkansas, which have tightened standards on disposal wells in recent months after determining that injections may have triggered earthquakes at wells near fault systems.
