Law360, New York (July 10, 2015, 10:21 AM EDT) -- In early May, Patriot Coal, the 12th-largest coal producer in the United States, filed for bankruptcy for the second time in three years. Why? Has the coal industry, forced to compete head-to-head with cleaner natural gas and burdened with substantial legacy liabilities, taken the path of the buggy maker? The answer seems to be "no," at least in the short term. With 39 percent of today's power generated in the United States still produced by coal, coal remains an energy source the United States must continue to use.
