EPA Orders Port Of Tacoma To Restore Wetlands

Law360, New York (September 03, 2010, 3:19 PM ET) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the Port of Tacoma to restore wetlands it allegedly destroyed or else face daily penalties of up to $37,500.

The port cleared out portions of the 17-acre Hylebos Marsh in northern Washington state without obtaining a Clean Water Act permit as required by federal law, the EPA said in a statement on Thursday.

The marsh helps prevent contaminants from flowing into Commencement Bay, a designated Superfund site in the Puget Sound region. The EPA has poured millions of dollars...
