Consol To Pay $1.4M To End Coal Mining Pollution Suit

Law360, New York (September 17, 2010, 11:32 AM ET) -- A coal mining subsidiary of Consol Energy Inc. has agreed to fork over $1.4 million and curtail pollution from its mountaintop removal mines, ending a lawsuit by environmentalists that pilloried the company for ignoring surface mining regulations.

Powellton Coal Co. LLC signed a consent decree, entered Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, vowing to control its pollution and pony up money for fines and the creation of a legal clinic that protects local waterways.
