Mine Operator Owes Millions For CWA Violations: Suit

Law360, New York (November 01, 2011, 8:54 PM ET) -- The Sierra Club and other environmental groups sued National Coal LLC in Tennessee on Monday seeking millions of dollars in penalties against the mine operator for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act by dumping iron and manganese into local waterways, harming fish and wildlife.

The Tennessee Clean Water Network and Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment, a grassroots citizens organization, joined the suit accusing National Coal of polluting rivers in excess of the amounts allowed by the company's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit.
